Kitchen Utensils

This body of work focuses on recreating kitchen tools that serve a specific function. Whether that function has been outdated over time and has evolved, is rarely used in day-to-day practices, or is only used for special occasions. These objects facilitate a shared experience of community, caring for each other, and giving back.

A cake slicer for enjoying special moments for celebrating.

Brass and Stainless Steel

A toast fork once used to toast bread over an open fire now has been outdated by modern technology.

Brass and Stainless Steel

A pair of sugar tongs that resemble the less desirable scissor-style that was phased out by the tong style used in tea culture.

Brass

Finally, an herb cutter whose simple function has lasted through the years.

Afterthoughts

Making this body of work I have realized that I had fun making these items (designing, sawing, soldering, etc.), but there’s a natural default in “redesigning” that comes across as being safe. I am not entirely disheartened by that fact, I just didn’t make anything really new other than redesigning these utensils (compared to the eggbeater), though these are one-of-a-kind pieces which I do like because of that. I would say that the herb cutter is the one that stands out the most because of its pierced sections that don’t match the other utensils; it feels more industrial.
